San Diego Fun Guide – Heading South of the Border

Table Encuentro

Wine. From pleasure to passion this universally celebrated beverage has no boundaries. California is home to several wineries that have satisfied cravings for tasters of all palates. I invite you to refresh your senses and take a trip just south of San Diego to Baja California’s diamond in the rough, Valle Guadalupe.

In less than one hour from entering the gates that hold the myths, the misconceptions, and the stereotypical thoughts about our neighbor to the south, you will discover a new world of possibilities on what the locals call Ruto Del Vino. Often referred to as Napa circa 1950, the area boasts 89 wineries, over 50 restaurants and a rich cultural history the locals are excited to share. This baja norte local wannabe has a new weekend destination, and it all starts with a reservation with Fernando.

Our group was picked up at our rental house at 10am on a Saturday morning. We were met with a “Buenos Dias”, smiling eyes, a firm handshake, and an ice chest ready for our AM cervesas. The next 45 minutes were filled with conversation about historical fact, a photo opp at the old pre-fence border, and our own soundtrack ala Fernando’s WiFi hotspot.

I had been in communication with Fernando via phone and email prior to our arrival, and worked out an ideal per person price that was well within the monthly budget. His company, Tours in Baja, is one of the few that offers concierge-like tours along the Ruto De Vino. There were 3 stops mapped out for us included in the tour, and plenty of room for suggestions and spontaneous decisions based on our desires.

We visited 5 wineris for tastings that were all fantastic and stopped to meet Dona Tere for some hand made tortillas filled with shrimp, lamb, or fish and our choice of fixings. The grand finale was a table with the most amazing view at Encuentro Guadalupe, reserved special by Fernando, along with a private tour of the cellar and an “encounter” we will never forget.

We’ll let you create your own magical tour but I will leave you with one secret, be on the lookout for El Buen Sazon- the good Sizzle- you won’t find it on any map.

Channel your inner Som and enjoy the ride. Make your reservation to remember.
